Saudi Arabia-based diversified chemicals provider SABIC has introduced two new high-flow, injection-moulding grade materials, 513MK46 and 512MK46, for use in packaging applications.

Forming a part of the company’s SABIC PP polypropylene portfolio, the newly launched materials are a set of impact copolymers based on a phthalate-free catalyst.

The copolymers will allow packaging manufacturers and converters to produce lightweight, thin-walled packaging solutions that will reduce production costs.

Manufactured at SABIC’S facility in Jubail, Saudi Kayan, the materials will be available for customers across the world.

SABIC polypropylene business director Lada Kurelec said: “The need for the industry has never been greater to find efficient solutions to the challenges – especially in food packaging – that the world faces today.

“SABIC understands the need for its packaging customers to not only stay ahead of industry trends and regulations but also meet the demand for lowering weight and cost by reducing packaging thickness with down gauging, faster production cycle times, and minimising waste and the environmental impact.

“SABIC’S new impact polypropylene 513MK46 and 512MK46 grades are created to help our customers remain at the forefront of industry where consumer safety and sustainability are all critical.”

Suitable for various food and non-food rigid packaging applications, the SABIC PP 513MK46 and 512MK46 materials are said to provide an improved balance between high stiffness and impact strength than standard impact copolymers.

They also offer higher top-load strength for high stackability and lower transport and storage costs to the manufacturers.

In addition, the new grades will help SABIC customers to comply with the industry’s organoleptic requirements for taste and odour.
