European paper packaging company Smurfit Kappa is set to install a new digital printer Barberan Jetmaster 1890 at its Atlacomulco corrugated plant in Mexico.

The move is part of the company’s efforts to invest in sustainable technology in the country.

According to the company, the new single-pass printer is expected to have a printing capacity of 12 million square metres a year and will reduce the lead-time for introducing products to the market.

Smurfit Kappa Americas CEO Juan Guillermo Castaneda said: “As the leading supplier of paper-based packaging in the Americas, we are pleased to continue bringing the latest industry innovations to Mexico.

“Mexico is a market with strong growth potential, which is key to our operations in the region. We continue to invest in this country to offer our customers market-leading, sustainable packaging solutions.”

This month, the paper packaging firm expects to begin the new printer installation. The printer will become fully operational in the first quarter of 2020.

Smurfit Kappa Mexico CEO Jorge Alberto Angel noted that the investment in the new six-colour printer is part of the company’s objective to respond to customers’ needs in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market.

Angel said: “This high-specification printer will offer enhanced branding opportunities and best-in-class service for our customers.”

In July, Smurfit Kappa opened a new recycling plant in Tuscany, Italy, to strengthen its recovered paper service in the country.
