Smurfit Kappa has launched a recyclable primary packaging solution to prevent the transfer of mineral oil into packaged foods.

Known as MB12, the carton has been designed to offer a sustainable solution for food-safe packaging.

The company noted that the solution was subjected to testing by food and pharmaceutical product testing firm, Eurofins.

Based on a study conducted by the Technical University of Dresden, it was found that MB12 provided the most protection for packaged food against potential contamination at the time of testing in the first quarter of 2016.

Smurfit Kappa paper division product development vice-president Lars Henriksson said: “Our customers have a diverse set of needs and we are committed to helping them find the right primary packaging for their requirements.

“The solution also offers protection against organoleptic effects of taste and odour seeping into the food.”

“Developing our unique MB12  primary packaging further demonstrates how we are innovating to provide a broad range of sustainable solutions for our customers that not only meet all food safety standards but that go one step further.”

According to the company, MB12 is prepared using natural ingredients in recycled board and can be delivered as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain-of-custody certified.

The solution is available in a range of weights, also offering protection against organoleptic effects of taste and odour seeping into the food.

The main source of mineral oil is printing ink, which can remain in recycled packaging in low quantities due to the recycling process.

Apart from printing ink, mineral oil can also be found in food additives, processing aids and lubricants used in the food processing industry.
