Irish packaging giant Smurfit Kappa has purchased cardboard and corrugated board packaging firm Papcart to expand its product range in France.

The deal will expand Smurfit Kappa’s portfolio with the addition of a complete range of products in the luxury goods, wines and spirits, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and bag-in-box markets.

Papcart offers a range of gift and premium packaging solutions using offset printers, die-cutters, folder-gluers and finishing equipment.

The company currently has 44 facilities in Gétigné and 16 in Jarnac, with 50,000m² of production, storage and office space.

Smurfit Kappa Europe CEO Saverio Mayer said: “This latest acquisition is of significant strategic importance for our French operations and significantly adds to the range of capabilities that we can offer our customers.”

The deal has also expanded the company’s team to approximately 700 employees.

In a separate development, Smurfit Kappa Group has acquired two Europac plants in Brittany, France, to strengthen its presence in the country’s fruit and vegetable sector.

The two plants include Caradec Box Plant in the Morbihan County and the Saint Pol de Léon plant in the Finistére County.

As part of the deal, the company will add 200 employees to its global workforce.

Smurfit Kappa France CEO Jean-Christophe Bugeon said: “More and more retailers and growers are seeking more sustainable packaging alternatives for fresh produce and we can add an even wider choice of premium solutions to our offering.”

Smurfit Kappa currently has a presence in the consumer packaging segments and corrugated board solutions for perfume and food sectors.
