Flexible packaging Canadian company TC Transcontinental has established a Recycling Group as part of its commitment towards circular economy.

The new group was created within the company’s TC Transcontinental Packaging unit and will be led by Sylvain Levert as senior vice-president. He will report to TC Transcontinental Packaging president Thomas Morin.

The group will be responsible for acquiring equipment that helps convert flexible plastics into recycled plastic granules. The plastics will be sourced from sorting facilities and other commercial, industrial and agricultural sectors.

The recovered plastic is expected to encourage the creation of local outlets for sorting facilities and companies in the above sectors.

Additionally, the team will focus on acquiring companies in this sector.

TC Transcontinental president and chief executive officer François Olivier said: “The creation of the Recycling Group aims to vertically integrate the recycling of plastics in our packaging production chain in Canada, the United States and Latin America, ultimately ensuring stable procurement of this material for us.

“This decision stems from our desire and that of many customers to differentiate ourselves with an offering of eco-responsible packaging products containing recycled plastic, accelerate its development, and create a truly circular economy for plastic that will bring further benefits for the environment and for communities.”

The formation of Recycling Group is expected to enable TC Transcontinental to meet its goal as a member of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment.

Under this commitment, the company plans to enhance the use of post-consumer recycled materials across its flexible plastic packaging products.

Last month, TC Transcontinental completed the acquisition of in-store marketing company Artisan Complete for an undisclosed amount.
