Specialty biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films manufacturer Treofan has decided to invest $45m in a new five-layer, 10.4m orientation line at its facility in Zacapu, Mexico.

The new asset is expected to commence operations from late 2018 and increase the net capacity of the facility by nearly 30,000t annually.

The existing small line, which has been in operation since 1992, will be mothballed.

Treofan Americas CEO Jon Knight said: “The additional asset represents the next phase of the group's reinvestment strategy, which was initiated in 2014 at our facility in Neunkirchen, Germany.

“The advanced capacity and capabilities will enable us to continue to grow with our valued customers in our key markets.”

Treofan Americas COO Allan Crighton said: “We have been working in close cooperation with Brückner to design a line capable of producing our current and future specialty BOPP film products at more than 10m wide and at speeds of up to 600m per minute, building on the experience gained with the 8.2m five-layer Brückner line which has now been running for almost ten years.”

The company focuses on manufacturing BOPP films which are used in various packaging, label, tobacco and technical applications.

Besides Mexico, the company owns production facilities located in Germany and Italy.
