Label materials manufacturer UPM Raflatac is set to open a new slitting and distribution terminal in Santiago, Chile, early next year as a part of its expansion programme in the Latin American pressure-sensitive label market.

The company is constructing the new terminal in the Lo Boza industrial sector adjacent to Santiago International Airport.

After completion, the facility is expected to allow UPM Raflatac to improve its service capabilities and offer a range of paper and film products to customers in Chile especially in the wine and craft beverage market segments.

UPM Raflatac Global Films SBU & Americas Region senior vice-president Mark Pollard said: “UPM Raflatac is proud to expand its operations in South America and our new terminal demonstrates our commitment to the Chilean market and surrounding region.

“The wine market continues to flourish, and the new terminal gives us the capability to expand our local high-quality product portfolio and combine it with best-in-class service.

“We look forward to further growth opportunities both here and around the world.”

The new facility will have 2m-wide slitting capabilities and the company intends to have trimless offerings on selected materials.

“The wine market continues to flourish, and the new terminal gives us the capability to expand our product portfolio.”

It will join UPM Raflatac’s growing Americas Terminal Network, which features multiple facilities throughout North and South America.

In a separate development, the company announced the launch of a new range of uncoated and top-coated Bisphenol A-free (BPA-free) thermal label materials.

The new range complies with the new EU regulations that require all thermal paper sold in the continent Europe to be free of BPA after 2 January 2020.

Thermal paper uses BPA as a colour developer, and is commonly used in the retail sector for receipt paper and weighing scale labels.
