Paper and pulp industries technology and services provider Valmet has agreed to provide its new reel and winding technology for Metsä Board.

Valmet’s technology and related equipment will be installed at Metsä Board’s Kyro mill in Finland.

Metsa Board is planning to upgrade the board machine KK 1 with new reel and winder with an automatic transfer rail connection.

The order is recorded in Valmet’s orders received of the second quarter 2020, while the start-up is planned for the second half of next year.

Financial details of the order are not disclosed.

Valmet product sales manager Marko Korpinen said: “In addition to Valmet’s technology, there were other important factors for getting this project. Our local presence and high expertise level in project management and production support with strong training offering will secure fast start-up without any disturbance in Kyro’s supply chain.”

Under the contract, Valmet will deliver two of its Broke Pulpers and an OptiReel Linear with centre drives, as well as automatic transfer rails and an OptiCart Stream parent roll cart with integrated loading.

The company said it will outfit the new high-capacity OptiWin Drum two-drum winder with a Dual Unwind two-unwind system.

Valmet will also deliver its DNA machine control system.

KK 1 has a reel width of 3,450mm, which is capable of making folding boxboard grades with a basis weight range of 170-380g/m2.

Metsä Board project manager Jarno Lehtonen said: “We wanted to modernise the board-making finishing area and eliminate bottlenecks to meet the capacity needs of today and the future. Another important factor was reducing the risk of board calibre loss. Valmet’s reeling and winding solutions have features that fit this purpose well.”
