Finland’s natural mineral water Vellamo and labelling solutions provider UPM Raflatac have partnered for sustainable bottled water packaging.

As part of the partnership, Vellamo’s bottles will feature UPM Raflatac Forest Film, which is said to be the world’s first wood-based polypropylene plastic label material.

The film is developed from UPM BioVerno naphtha, which is 100% wood-based solution, originating from sustainably managed forests.

The film has been developed as a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil-based virgin materials.

UPM Raflatac Films Business Americas director Daryl Northcott said: “This is an ideal collaboration and event to showcase how labels matter when it comes to sustainable packaging.

“Our collaboration with Vellamo is an excellent example of how we are labelling a smarter future beyond fossils by working together to have the first bottled product in any industry, featuring our innovative UPM Raflatac Forest Film label materials.”

In addition, Forest Film incorporates a smart label solution, UPM Raflatac’s RafMore.

The solution provides users with real-time information about product lifecycle and carbon footprint data. It is unique for every Vellamo bottle.

Based in Heinola, Finland, Vellamo is owned and operated by Ice Age Water.

Ice Age Water CEO Petteri Ahonen said: “Vellamo is one of Mother Nature’s perfect creations and we are excited to share how we have taken great measures to ensure our unique taste, purity and sustainability for the health of our customers and planet by achieving a neutral carbon footprint across production, packaging and logistics.”

Vellamo complies with European natural mineral water standards and maintains its official seal of approval and quality status.

In 2019, Vellamo launched C02ZERO Sustainability Program with the aim of reducing CO₂ in process and product lifecycle to zero.
