Côn Đảo Island District in the southern Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu Province of Vietnam has partnered with non-governmental organisation World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) for the launch of a new programme to tackle single-use plastic.

Local authorities of the island district have introduced a Zero Plastic Waste programme to eliminate single-use plastic and cut plastic bags.

The programme includes 74 businesses from the district and seeks to promote awareness among local islanders and tourists, reported Vietnam News Agency (VNA).

Under this programme, shops will offer environmentally friendly bags instead of plastic bags for free.

Produced using canvas, these bags can be taken at the Côn Đảo market desk.

The island contributes 70,000 tonnes of garbage to Bãi Nhát dump, VNA reported citing island’s nature resources and environment department official Phạm Bảo Ân.

Meanwhile, the district along with other agencies has been working on plastic bag and single-use plastic consumption database to curb plastic waste pollution.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) launched a garbage sorting programme to reduce plastic waste at 12 Marine Protected Areas in Vietnam.

In February this year, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) urged the Malaysian government to cut down on plastic packaging after finding Malaysians to be the biggest individual consumers of plastic packaging.
