Speciality chemicals company Altana has announced the acquisition of Henkel's speciality coatings business for an undisclosed sum.

The business primarily supplies products to the North American packaging industry, selling under the brand names MiraFoil and Miracure.

MiraFoil coatings are an environmentally responsible method of foil board laminating and hot foil stamping, reducing waste and shortening lead times.

Miracure is a range of matte, gloss, satin and silicone coatings for conventional printing processes, creating a better visual appearance such as glow in the dark or a dimensional texture.

Henkel's business generated sales of approximately $15m in 2012. It will be integrated into Actega Kelstar in the US and Actega Terra in Germany.

Altana CEO Dr Matthias Wolfgruber said: "By acquiring the specialty coatings business of Henkel we are continuing to execute our North American growth strategy consistently and focus on innovative speciality chemicals."

Altana is based in Germany. It develops and produces products in the speciality chemicals business and has about 85% of its sales generated by international activities.
