Aqua Based Technologies has introduced a new water-based coating for the paper converting, food packaging and food service industries.
The new eco-friendly, repulpable Aqualene 5050 coating, which has high oil and grease resistance (OGR), complies with FDA requirements for direct food contact packaging.
The coating is said to be volatile organic compounds (VOC) free and does not contain any ozone-depleting ingredients. It is designed for use with paper, board and new starch-based food packaging substrates (such as PLA), which require resistance to oil and grease.
The packaging substrates include food wrappers and bags, paper and paperboard packaging, microwave packaging, frozen food containers, paper plates, boxes and cups.
Aqua Based claims that Aqualene 5050 is suitable for diverse end-use applications, as it is flexible and non-yellowing and it dries clear. The firm says that the coating requires only light application levels in order to achieve desired results.
A minimum coating weight of only 2g/m² provides high OGR results of Kit 8-10, according to the company's testing.
The product is applied by conventional coating apparatus, such as gravure, flexo, rod, or roll-coater. It is used as supplied and is available in pails, drums and totes.
Aqua Based Technologies is a division of ADM Tronics. The company develops and manufacturers water-based adhesives, primers, coatings and additives for sale across the US and internationally. It supplies the food, medical and pharmaceutical packaging industries, and other industries including laminating, converting, wall covering, printing and graphic arts.
