Belgium-based VPK Packaging Group has opened a new high-stack warehouse for paper rolls at its Blue Papers joint venture site in Strasbourg, France.
Opened with an investment of €6m, the new fully automated warehouse can store 12,000t of paper and is nearly double the size of Blue Papers’ existing storage unit.
After being produced, paper rolls are transported along conveyor belts to the entrance of the new warehouse.
Vacuum technology has been used to stack paper rolls on top of each other before they are shipped.
The rolls are placed in one of four loading docks by the vacuum grippers and loaded onto trucks, which will then deliver the consignment to its destination.
As part of its €100m conversion project, Blue Paper has installed a paper machine that produces more than 1,000t of packaging paper per day and invested €5m in a new steam turbine.
The company currently produces testliner and fluting from 80g/m² to 120g/m² of paper.
With 140 employees, the site has a production capacity of 360,000t of paper per year.
