Australian sustainable resins supplier Cardia Bioplastics has partnered with rigid plastic packaging company Alto Food Packaging to produce new environmentally-friendly packaging solutions manufactured with its thermoplastic starch resins.
Both the companies will initially produce packaging that will focus on fresh food.
Derived from corn crops grown for industrial use, the renewable bio-hybrid resins are compatible with existing plastic recycling processes and are food safe compliant.
According to Cardia Bioplastics, the resins combine renewable thermoplastics with oil-based polymer material to cut down dependence on limited oil resources, as well as decreasing carbon footprint.
The bioplastic resins from Cardia have renewable content and lower carbon footprint when compared to conventional resins.
Cardia Bioplastics managing director Dr Frank Glatz said the use of renewable components in the development of packaging solutions with enhanced environmental properties is significant enough to be considered by the packaging industry.
"By incorporating our thermoplastic starch resins into their packaging systems, Alto Packaging is taking significant steps to reduce the environmental footprint of their packaging products," Glatz added.
Alto, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Pact Group also plans to work with Cardia Bioplastics to bring more environmentally-friendly packaging solutions to the markets in Australia and in New Zealand.
Alto, which has eight plants in New Zealand and four in Australia, specialises in extrusion and thermoforming, blow moulding and injection moulding for use in a wide range of market areas including fresh food, beverage, personal care and health, industrial and technical.
