South African coffee roasting company Caturra Coffee has adopted Innovia Films' cellulose NatureFlex compostable films to develop new coffee packs.
According to biaxially-oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films manufacturer Innovia, Caturra sought advice of local distributor Natural Pack about making their packaging fit their coffee ethics.
The coffee packs, which have been developed by working in collaboration with converter Colpak, were created using NatureFlex films in their construction.
The pack structure is made using three-layers, which consist of a printable, transparent barrier layer on the outer layer, NatureFlex NK 20µm film.
A metallised high barrier layer NatureFlex NKME 20µm in middle layer and a 50µm bio-polymer sealant layer providing seal strength and integrity also constituted the packaging.
Natural Pack managing director John Fox said the packs offer good barrier to moisture and oxygen preserving the aroma and taste of the coffee, besides providing better shelf life for the product.
"Once the coffee packs are made and printed by Colpak, Caturra fills and seals them with its gourmet coffee range sourced from exotic locations around the globe," Fox said.
Innovia's NatureFlex films have been certified to meet the American ASTM D6400, European EN13432 and Australian AS4736 standards for compostable packaging.
The films' renewable biobased content is 95% by weight of material according to ASTM D6866.
Various benefits, such as deadfold and anti-static properties, gloss and resistance to grease and oil, good barrier to gases, aromas and mineral oils, high barrier to moisture vapour and a wide heat-seal range, are offered by the films for packing and converting.
Innovia Films area sales manager Peter Van Belle said, "The environment continues to be high on the agenda in the packaging market, and coffee products that are certified by organisations such as Rainforest Alliance are a good fit with more sustainable packaging."
