ESS, Xyntek-Antares team up to develop new case packing solution for pharma bottles

ESS Technologies and Xyntek-Antares in the US have entered into a collaboration to develop a track and trace case packing solution for the pharmaceutical industry.

The new ESS TaskMate robotic case erector / loader will be integrated with the Xyntek-Antares turnkey serialisation solution, which has the Antares tracking system software as well as the Omnivision 360° bottle tracking system for serialisation and aggregation.

With the help of the new system, pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers can automate the case packing process, while providing unit serialisation and track and trace technology for all of the products that are being case packed.

The TaskMate robotic case erecting and loading system for pharmaceutical bottles integrates a Fanuc LR Mate 200iC/5L multi-axis robot with end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) designed by ESS to create a compact case packing system.

Based on the required payload, other Fanuc robot models may also be specified.

Vacuum cups present on the EOAT pick an RSC case blank from a magazine.

The case is erected, the bottom is taped closed and the case is placed in the loading position, according to ESS.

The Xyntek-Antares bottle tracking system will read the unique serial number on the labelled bottle and aggregate it to a ‘dummy’ code available on the bottle’s base, enabling a 100% verification of the bottles as they are packed by the case erector into the case.

The bottles are collated into a 4 x 3 pack pattern, once they leave the tracking system, and the robot will then pick the entire pack pattern and load it into the case.

Prior to placing the bottles in the case, an integrated Cognex smart camera will read all of the bottom codes of the bottle bundle as they are being packed into the case.

Based on the pack pattern, the tracking system software will confirm the unique serial numbers and print a case label to complete the bottle to case aggregation.

According to ESS, the loaded case will be pushed by EOAT onto an exit conveyor.

The system, which has the capacity to handle up to five cases per minute, is also suited for integration with track and trace applications.
