UK’s Faerch Plast has developed a new range of crystalline polyethylene terephthalate (CPET) containers targeted at the premium ready-to-cook sector.

UK's Faerch Plast has developed a new range of crystalline polyethylene terephthalate (CPET) containers targeted at the premium ready-to-cook sector.

The new dual-ovenable 'aluminium-look' containers are said to be a first for the UK market and are specifically suited for ready-to-cook fish and chicken meals.

According to the company, the packs provide maximum on-shelf impact and are available in the complete CPET range of styles and single, multi-compartment sizes.

Faerch Plast managing director Joe Iannidinardo said CPET trays account for more than 80% the company's sales in the UK.

"Achieving a metallic look in CPET trays is notoriously difficult. When polyester crystallises, the colour dulls down resulting in a flat grey at best. We developed a special technique that enables us to get the required metallic effect without compromising on functionality," Iannidinardo said.

The new process also opens up the possibility to develop other colours in the future, which include gold, bronze and copper.

CPET trays do way with negative effects on food flavour and aroma and offer better protected meals to the consumers.

For freezer-to-oven or microwave convenience, the trays feature a wide temperature tolerance from -4°F (-20°C) to 430°F (220°C), the company claims.

A top layer of co-extruded amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (APET) gives the new packaging good sealing properties and a better appearance.

Faerch Plast supplies plastics packaging products to major blue chip customers in the ready meal, fresh meat, cold foods and snacks, and ambient food sectors with a range of containers and trays produced from PS, CPET, APET, PP, PLA, MAPET and AMPET.
