Henkel and DaniMer Scientific have joined forces to develop new hotmelt adhesives for the consumer packaging market including applications for end-of-line and labeling.
The partnership will combine the German company’s knowledge in hotmelt adhesive formulation, application and global footprint with DaniMer’s expertise in biopolymer science, proprietary production capabilities and its bio-based technology platform.
The alliance, which aims to bring to the marketplace a new technology platform, will include development of a family of bio-based hotmelt adhesives.
According to Henkel, the adhesives can be applied to a wide range of customer operating applications, including general purpose end of line, performance end of line, labeling and specialised applications such as frozen food packaging.
Henkel Adhesive Technologies product development senior vice-president Gary Raykovitz said its customers in the consumer packaging industry have publicised projects to drive sustainability initiatives, including carbon footprint reduction of packaging materials and diversifying their supply chains.
"Henkel and DaniMer working together to solve these issues is yet another confirmation that we will consistently deliver genuinely innovative technologies that enhance our customers’ efforts to achieve their sustainability goals," Raykovitz said.
The technology, along with other technologies on which Henkel is working, is claimed to aid customers in cutting down their dependence on petroleum-based materials in their packaging operations.
DaniMer’s technology platform for bio-based hotmelt adhesives involves manufacturing with significant use of renewably sourced materials while supporting health and safety requirements for use of these materials in packaging applications, which should make it attractive to customers within the industry.
The first products in the platform are expected to be ready for market launch in the first half of 2013.
