Huhtamaki, a subsidiary of Huhtamäki Oyj, is all set to open a new manufacturing and distribution unit in Batavia Township, Ohio, US with an investment of €45m ($60m) over the next three years.

According to the company the total investment, a major part of which is expected to take place in 2013, will include the site purchase, upgrades in infrastructure and machinery investments.

The 925,000ft² facility will initially produce paper cups and distribute products made throughout the Huhtamaki manufacturing network, serving customers in the food service and retail industries.

Huhtamaki North America president Clay Dunn said the investment demonstrates the company's proposal to serve the growing needs of its customers for tableware, cups, containers, carriers and serviceware.

"Today's announcement caps an exciting 18-month period in which we completed three acquisitions and added seven production facilities in the US to expand our ability to offer customers a broad product line and coast-to-coast coverage from 17 North American plants," Dunn said.

Construction of the new facility will begin in 2013, which will see the installation of new production lines for manufacturing cups as well as to build the distribution centre, while commercial production is slated to launch in the fourth quarter.

The facility, with capacity for expansion over the next several years, has the necessary space and infrastructure to address growing customer needs for additional products and production volume.

The site is located in Batavia, Ohio, with rail and highway access and proximity to major foodservice markets.
