UK-based multi-material packaging manufacturer Linpac Packaging has developed a new range of domed pizza bases.
The domed design is aimed at addressing the problem of toppings tumbling to the bottom of packages when pizzas are displayed vertically on the shelf by retailers.
The pizza bases also help consumers view the ingredients inside the packaging, and help keep toppings uniformly spread across the pizza.
Linpac Packaging marketing manager Megan Ashcroft said that there are two main reasons why retailers prefer to display pizzas vertically on the shelf.
"First, it allows the product to be clearly seen by the consumer, enticing them to make a purchase, and secondly, it allows them to maximise the shelf space available."
Linpac’s domed bases enable retailers to make optimum use of shelf space, as well as solving the tumbling problem associated with traditional flat pizza bases.
The pizza bases are part of Linpac Packaging’s new Freshware range. They are manufactured from expanded polystyrene (EPS), and are available with optional ventilation holes to prevent the dough from becoming soggy.
As well as pizza, the Freshware range includes packaging for prepared fruit and salads, dips, sandwich fillers, fresh pasta, prepared vegetables, cooked meats and prepared fish.
Linpac launched its Freshform division in January to support the development of its Freshware range and move into the chilled prepared and convenience sector.
The domed bases are the second packaging innovation developed for pizzas under the Freshware label. The company previously collaborated with a supermarket retailer to design and develop a pizza disc with a squared base to enable shingling of the pizza on shelves.
