Multivac Marking & Inspection has unveiled a new inspection system which checks the quality of seal seams in the thermoforming packaging machine itself.

The new Multivac Vision System (MVS) seal seam scanner helps avoid product recalls and detects faulty packs prior to despatch.

According to the Germany-based company, an immediate inspection of the seal seams optimises the packaging procedure and the quality of the product, which protects the brand and leads to cost savings.

The MVS allows the film, along with the seal seam, to be fed and held precisely in the packaging machine, and the fully automatic inspection captures all packs completely.

Besides detecting foreign bodies in the seal seam from a size as small as 0.5mm², the seal seam scanner detects incomplete seal seams or seal seam faults such as creases or bubbles, and is suitable for all film materials.

With a scanning range of up to a width of 700mm, the rapid image processing of the MVS ensures that there is a better level of throughput.

The maintenance-free MVS requires a space of only 60cm in length to be installed in the thermoforming packaging machine, and can also be retrofitted to existing machines easily.

With an image archive of faulty products complete with time signature as well as a machine logbook, the system supports the traceability of packs.

Multivac said the system can be completely integrated into the packaging lines, and its operation is supported through the control terminal of the thermoforming packaging machine.

Recipe management and pack traceability functions are integrated in the line-motion control of the packaging machine, and live images are displayed in real time.

The system helps to set up and optimise new products offline and also offers remote support for setting up the image processing.
