Packaging companies Rexam, Sonoco and Ball have been selected to join the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index (DJSI), revealing their status as leading sustainability companies globally.

Rexam chief executive Graham Chipchase said that the company focuses on sustainability while producing 60 billion cans each year.

"The performance factors considered in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index selection process have long been engrained in Rexam's culture," Chipchase added.

Sonoco received good scores in corporate governance, risk and crisis management, supply chain management and corporate citizenship and philanthropy.

Sonoco president and CEO Jack Sanders said: "Sonoco has been committed to corporate responsibility and sustainable business practices throughout our 114-year history."

Ball is the only packaging company listed in both the DJSI World and the DJSI North America indices. It earned scores in all three dimensions including economic, environmental and social and specifically scored well on criteria integral to its Drive for 10 and sustainability strategies.

The DJSI tracks the performance of sustainability-driven companies worldwide and provides reliable, objective benchmarks for asset managers with sustainability portfolios.
