French food distribution group Système U has selected Tetra Recart flexible laminate cartons for the sterile packaging of its food products.

The company will use of the cartons for its new U-brand kidney beans and chickpeas, and also for its existing canned products such as white beans, baked beans and prepared lentils.

Made from FSC-certified renewable wood cardboard, Tetra Recart cartons feature a rectangular design, better visual appeal, easy opening as well as no sharp edges.

Tetra Pak says that the cartons optimise space and weight at stores and in distribution, enabling savings of up to 40% by eliminating space wastage. Compared to the older canned system, Tetra Recart cartons allow the shipment of an additional 384 packages per pallet.

Système U private label marketing head Anne-Marie Roche said that the Tetra Recart packaging would enhance the company's brands on the shelf.

"We have put support measures in place so that our customers and in-store employees have a better understanding of our decision," Roche added.

In January, the food distribution company also introduced a range of four new tomato products packaged in Tetra Recart cartons.
