Northern Ireland-based contract services provider Almac, has acquired a Uhlmann blister line for its new 100,000ft² commercial packaging facility in Audubon, Pennsylvania, US.

The new UPS 4 blister line, which includes an integrated C2206 cartoner, will process solid oral dose products and provide primary packaging into a range of materials including PVC, PVC/PVDC, Aclar and Alu/Alu.

With an output of up to 12,000 blisters per hour, the line acquired from US pharmaceutical equipment supplier Uhlmann will serve as a good packaging solution, said the company.

Commenting on the acquisition, Almac manufacturing operations vice president Geoff Sloan said that the versatile, high-spec blistering line will match the company’s US client requirements for a high-quality, flexible commercial packaging solution.

The line can process multi-product blisters and print online blisters, and addresses the need for enhanced patient compliance, claimed Almac.

The UPS 4 is expected to enhance product compliance and will complement the full suite of flexible and commercial packaging equipment already installed in the new Audubon facility.

The line consists of a total quality control centre (TQCC), incorporating a checkweigher and integrated print and vision system for auto-rejection of incorrect print and serialisation data including 2D codes.

The additional technologies at the facility include bottling, walleting and vial labelling and packaging.
