Dutch dairy cooperative FrieslandCampina, food packaging manufacturer Südpack and PET resin and sheet designer Octal have collaborated to produce a new packaging product for cheese.

FrieslandCampina had an aim to replace the existing bottom sheet for its cheese packaging with a recyclable material. Octal’s new direct-to-sheet PET (DPET) provides better strength compared to laminated APET/PE and is also 100% recyclable.

DPET technology, the world’s first direct-to-sheet polyester sheet, eliminates five energy intensive stages of the conventional sheet production process. The material is expected to meet or exceed the demanding specifications of Südpack’s form/fill/seal technology.

According to Octal, the new packaging also has a lower carbon footprint than any other PET available on the market, and combines sustainability and product performance, including consistency, easy forming, better machine output, and good aesthetics.

Octal COO William Barenberg Jr told foodbev.com that direct-to-sheet technology sets a new quality standard as well as sustainability for the food packaging market.

"This translates into better processing performance for customers and a superior stream of PET flake for collection and reprocessing waste," Barenberg added.

Octal aims to improve the PET sheet’s sustainability profile available to the market, and the sheets or pellets that are reprocessed after collection and reprocessing.
