Croda Polymer Additives has announced the launch of a new anti-fog concentrate, which works by preventing droplet formation on plastic surfaces and extending the shelf life of food.

The company claims that the new Atmer 7373 will provide a solution to fogging in clear polypropylene (PP) food packaging and works in both hot and cold fogging applications.

Croda polymer additives applications manager Adam Maltby said Atmer 7373 is handy in the majority of PP grades, and results have been the most impressive in PP homopolymer.

"As a highly-loaded concentrate it is particularly useful for converters who can easily handle its pellet form. It is also useful for masterbatch producers who either cannot or do not wish to handle soft and pasty raw materials," Maltby said.

The anti-fog concentrate has a new formulation, which is said to solve many of the processing difficulties, including screw slip or over-lubrication in the extruder barrel and excess fuming.

According to the UK-based specialty chemicals supplier, the processing problems will be taken care of when using traditional additives at the levels needed to pass on effective anti-fogging.

Atmer 7373 throws open new opportunities, particularly for film and sheet producers, as it is a 40% concentrate supplied in pellet form for easy dosing.

Besides helping control the rate of migration, the concentrate allows dispersion of the additive on the polymer surface evenly.

Croda Polymer provides effects including anti-fog, anti-static, mould release, pigment dispersion, slip and anti-block, torque release, UV-absorption and specialty plasticisers.
