Honeywell will provide the process automation technology for a new pulp paper mill being built and operated by North Star Pulp Industrial Complex in the Chita region of southeast Russia.

The new pulp mill is expected to be operational in mid 2015. It will be able to produce 230,000t of unbleached market pulp a year.

The mill is owned by China-based Heilongjiang Xingbang International Resources Investment. It will be operated using Honeywell’s Experion process knowledge system (PKS). The Experion PKS will be installed across all key process areas of the mill, including wood preparation, pulping and drying, chemical recovery and the combined heat and power plant.

Plans are underway to export the mill’s total production to China, including construction material, packaging and other products, in order to meet the rising demand for paper goods in the country. The consumption of paper-based goods in China increases by around 10% a year, and is set to reach 115 million tons in 2015.

North Star Pulp Industrial Complex chief engineer Yang Guangwen said that the company chose Honeywell’s control systems to improve production.

"Honeywell’s Experion PKS fully meets our requirements in terms of energy efficiency, reliability and safety," said Guangwen. "In addition, Honeywell has offices in Siberia and in China, which will make our collaboration easier."

Honeywell Process Solutions programme director Jarmo Kosunen said that the company’s technology can fulfill North Star Pulp Industrial Complex’s need for a productive and efficient pulp mill.

"Our technology will manage every main process in the mill, improving productivity, process reliability and helping to prevent unplanned shutdowns," added Kosunen.
