Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee is working on a new project to develop easy-to-tear and flexible bio-degradable packaging.

The students and faculty are developing three centres of excellence including the Centre for Urban Design and Development, the Centre for Packaging and the Centre for Healthcare Engineering.

IIT-Roorkee director Pradipta Banerji told IANS that the facilities are called centres of excellence as they are very different from the academic entity.

"Whenever you have to open ketchup packets it is difficult to tear them and the contents spill out," said Banerji. "We are working to develop easy and flexible packaging for the Indian market. It will be a blend of paper pulp and polymer technology."

IIT-Roorkee, located in the Uttarakhand state of India, is the only institute that has pulp and paper technology as well as polymer science departments.

The institute is also working on a project that calls for harvesting rain water, wastewater recycling and water management for optimum water utilisation in the state, helping farmers to irrigate their terrace farms.

To create models for waste management, the Centre for Urban Design and Development will be working with IIT students and faculty from architectural planning and civil and electronics engineering courses as well as the departments of earth and earthquake sciences.
