SCGM-owned Lee Soon Seng Plastic Industries, a manufacturer of thermo-formed plastic packaging and extrusion sheets, plans to foray into the Japanese and Cambodian markets.

LEE Soon Seng Plastic Industries managing director Datuk Seri Lee Hock Seng said the company expects to capture the Japanese market when its cleanroom facility is complete in two years.

"We bought in new thermo-formed plastic packaging and extruder machines last year, which contributed to increased production capacity and reduced wastage," Seng said.

The machines, which help to recycle waste materials, are environmentally-friendly.

LEE Soon, which has 30 thermo-forming and six extruder machines, started manufacturing the polylactic acid (PLA) food packaging containers for the US market in 2011.

The company also plans to foray into manufacturing disposable medical care products such as instrument trays and thermometer covers, besides packaging for the food and electronic sectors.

Going forward, LEE Soon is set to expand into new markets in eastern Europe and Australasia.

The Malaysia-based company, which is concentrating on emerging markets such as Myanmar, Pakistan and Portugal at present, sells more than half of its products in Malaysia.

The rest of the company’s products are exported to countries such as Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, India, Hong Kong, Macau and China.

Other markets for LEE Soon’s products include Spain, Greece, Italy, Austria, Australia, New Zealand, the US and Canada.
The company manufactures biodegradable containers that are made from 100% plant-based by-products such as barley, tapioca and corn.
