Old South Foods has selected new hot fill polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles from Amcor Rigid Plastics to replace its existing 16oz barbecue sauce decanter, which is made of glass.

According to Australia-based Amcor, the packaging conversion for John Boy and Billy’s Grillin’ Sauce brands from Big Show Foods marks the first use of PET containers by Old South Foods, a bottler and co-packer of restaurant foods in the US.

Amcor’s 16oz hot fill stock decanter can be used for foods such as barbecue sauces, marinades and salad dressings.

Old South Foods plant manager Greg Peckham said converting to PET for the 16oz decanters has provided benefits such as lighter weight and reduced breakage, alongside filling advantages.

"PET bottles are much easier to fill than glass, thus offering us greater accuracy in meeting proper volume measurements," Peckham said.

Amcor’s 16oz decanter has a 38mm 400 finish, which is well suited for a range of induction seal label systems.

Brand owner Big Show Foods wanted glass replacement options from CL Smith, a manufacturer and distributor of packaging in the US, which sourced the Amcor hot fill decanter and handled all product testing.

The hot fill decanters, which weigh 38.4g, have led to a major reduction in freight costs and significant reduction in breakage / damaged goods during manufacturing and in charge backs from retailers.

Helping to maintain John Boy and Billy’s Grillin’ Sauce brand image, lightweight PET also delivers a glass-like appearance and shelf-life appeal.

In 2011, Amcor commercialised 12oz 38mm ring neck style and 24oz 63mm wide mouth hot fill stock bottles for use in the food market.
