SABIC has improved its existing multi-layer film concept for packaging applications in the drinks sector of five layers or more.

The improved sustainable concept includes a combination of resins that comprise a new and major component, SABIC LDPE 2801TH00W, that allows further downgauging and increased output.

SABIC LDPE 2801TH00W is pure and features increased stiffness and better optical properties, machinability and punching performance.

The new multi-layer sustainable film concept enables manufacturers to create property configurations that cater to the specific needs of brand owners and the demands of the consumer.

With the new concept, food packaging manufacturers can increase their production capacity by up to 1,000kg per hour with a high degree of downgauging possibilities. It also allows producers to improve product performance by using the lowest gauge of film, while still meeting their requirements for strength, flexibility, and stiffness.

As SABIC’s multi-layer concept uses light-weight packaging solutions instead of traditional materials, it opens up new application areas and levels of sustainability performance.

SABIC LL-LDPE business director Mark Vester said: "Through this multi-layer concept, customers are presented with a relatively stiff film, enabling very thin gauges that reduce overall resource usage, resulting in less waste and costs, whilst still meeting their requirements for strength, flexibility, and stiffness."

The company is also in the process of developing improved multi-layer film concepts for other film segments including lamination, deep freeze, agriculture films and others.
