Non-profit organisation Multi-Material British Columbia (MMBC) has announced plans to launch a new recycling programme for packaging and printed paper in British Columbia (BC), Canada.

The programme will allow residents to recycle milk cartons, plant pots, aluminium foil packaging and drinks cups through curbside or multi-family building recycling services, or at local depots. The funds required for blue box recyclables will be collected from municipal taxpayers and businesses that manufacture or supply these items.

MMBC believes that the expansion of the range of recyclables that are accepted should encourage more recycling in the region.

MMBC managing director Allen Langdon said that with the new recycling programme, residents will have clarity on the new, improved and clear list of materials to be recycled, resulting in savings of $85m to BC taxpayers.

"This is an important change for residents and helps to increase access to consistent and convenient recycling," Langdon added.

BC’s recycling regulation was updated in May 2011 to shift the responsibility for managing the residential recycling of packaging and printed paper from regional and municipal governments and their taxpayers to business. The new programme is scheduled to launch on 19 May.
