Global chemical firm BASF has increased production of flexible food packaging film Ultramid C polyamide at its facility located in Ludwigshafen, Germany.

A part of the company’s Ultramid B (polyamide 6) production facility has been converted, making it capable of producing Ultramid C (polyamide 6/6.6) as required. The facility has an annual production capacity of 20,000t of polyamides.

BASF polyamide strategic marketing vice president Rainer Gretter said that the increase in Ultramid C production will allow the company cater more quickly to its customers’ needs.

"The applications and demands are becoming increasingly diverse, especially in the area of flexible food packaging films," Gretter added.

The company claims that the use of Ultramid polyamide in flexible packaging applications requires less packaging material, and helps in providing optimum protection for the product. It also claims that Ultramid increases the shelf life of products and reduces the amount of packaging material used to help the environment.

BASF supplies polyamide and polyamide intermediates for the engineering plastics, film, fibre and monofilament industries. Its line of products also includes Ultramid A (polyamide 6.6) and Ultramid S Balance (polyamide 6.10). The company operates Ultramid polymerisation plants in Ludwigshafen, Antwerp, Belgium, Freeport, Texas, and Sao Paulo, Brazil.
