UK-based Co-operative Group (Co-op) is set to introduce QR codes to fresh produce packaging to allow consumers to access information about the origins of food.

By scanning the codes with a mobile device in stores, consumers will be directed to the Co-op’s mobile site where they find information about the food, suppliers, nutritional information and recipes.

According to the retailer, consumers without smartphones can use an SMS text service that directs people to the mobile website.

The codes will first appear on packaging for apples, pears, onions, and potatoes, produced by British growers including The Co-op Farms.
