The Dutch Clean Cups initiative has finished work on home-compostable coffee capsules designed for use in Nespresso machines, but the companies involved have chosen not to bring the product to market at present due to changes in market and regulatory conditions.

The initiative was spearheaded by Dutch groups M-Plastics, Hemcell Resins and Euro-Caps, with support from the EFRO East Netherlands programme.

Its purpose was to create home-compostable substitutes for conventional coffee capsules.

According to the consortium, working prototypes were produced that satisfy the demands of key technologies across a selection of raw materials.

The capsules function effectively in standard single-serve coffee machines, including puncture resistance, sealing and coffee extraction.

Testing also showed that large-scale manufacturing is possible using customer communication management (CCM) technology.

During the course of the project, however, market and regulatory developments moved in a different direction from what had originally been expected.

The partners therefore decided not to proceed with commercialisation at this stage.

The consortium said a broader rollout could still be possible if the regulatory setting becomes more supportive in future.

It added that any durable market entry would also depend on economic viability and suitable trading conditions.

Meanwhile, Ahlstrom launched GreenPod Home, a fibre-based solution for the single-serve coffee pod sector, last year.

The solution carries the OK compost HOME certification from TÜV Austria, which verifies that the GreenPod Home range is capable of biodegrading under domestic composting conditions without leaving toxic residues or persistent microplastics.

In December 2024, NEXE Innovations delivered additional Biodegradable Products Institute-certified compostable coffee pods to EKOCUPS, an online retailer and a US-based Amazon seller.
