The recycled fibre content used in the development of the tray consists of post-consumer sources.

The company used a water-based barrier coating to develop the humidity-resistant tray and maintain its rigid form when refrigerated. It does not affect the cardboard’s recyclability and improves packaging efficiency.

The recyclable and compostable coating is patented and serves as a replacement for traditional wax or plastic-based applications.

The barrier helps to maintain the freshness of the food such as fruits, vegetables and proteins.

Cascades Specialty Products Group president and CEO Luc Langevin said: “This innovative product sits beautifully with our extensive line of efficient eco-friendly food packaging.

“Unique and current, this tray allows tons of fibres to be diverted from landfills. Together with our customers, we strive to make positive efforts to create a circular economy.”

The packaging solution complies with the standards of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Earlier this year, Cascades opened its new containerboard packaging plant in Piscataway, New Jersey, US. The company invested $76m for the 450,000ft² facility.

Over the past 50 years, Cascades has been committed to reducing its packaging footprint.
