Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) has partnered with International Paper Foodservice Europe to develop paperboard food buckets with grease-resistance for the UK and Irish markets.

The improvised version of the KFC bucket will feature a grease-resistant lining instead of a polyethylene lining. The new lining not only prevents grease build-up but will also improve food presentation and removes the requirement for plastic.

The new buckets, designed and developed for KFC at International Paper’s Winsford facility, has been certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).

"The new lining not only prevents grease build-up but will also improve food presentation and removes the requirement for plastic."

Polyethylene is usually used as an internal lining in food packaging to resist grease from food or externally to bolster print finish.

International Paper Foodservice Europe sales and marketing director David Lawlor was quoted by Foodbev.com saying: "We have invested a great deal of time in R&D to develop this unique product to meet the specific requirements of our customers and we are proud to have partnered with KFC to bring this to market."

KFC UK and Ireland product excellence department supply chain manager Julie Buffandeau was quoted by Packaging News saying: "The R&D team at Winsford took the brief and proved their ability to innovate, working closely with us to deliver a product that met our specifications and is truly unique in the market."
