Asia is poised to spearhead the global xylene capacity additions by 2030, mainly due to increasing demand for its key derivative, paraxylene (p-xylene). Paraxylene is a crucial component in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and purified terephthalic acid (PTA), which are extensively utilised in the packaging and textile industries, as well as in the manufacturing of a diverse range of consumer products.

Asia is anticipated to add a xylene production capacity of 19.23 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) during 2025 to 2030 from eight announced and ten planned projects. China and India are the two countries that are central to the capacity additions in the region, with 6.21mtpa and 5.69mtpa, respectively.

The highest capacity additions in the region are expected from four projects, each with a capacity of 2.0mtpa. Two of these projects are being planned in China – Fujian Sinopec Aramco Refining and Petrochemical Zhangzhou Xylene Plant and Huajin Aramco Petrochemical Panjin Xylene Plant. The remaining two – Brunei Hengyi Industries Pulau Muara Besar Xylene Plant 2 and Tongkun Petrochemical Indonesia North Kalimantan Xylene Plant – are being planned in Brunei and Indonesia, respectively.

The highest capacity additions in India, on the other hand, are likely to be added from two announced projects – Haldia Petrochemicals Cuddalore Xylene Plant and Haldia Petrochemicals Balasore Xylene Plant – each with a capacity of 1.60mtpa. Both are being planned by Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd and are expected to commence operations in 2029 and 2030, respectively.

The Middle East and Africa are other regions that are expected to add a capacity of 3.20mtpa, and 0.12mtpa, respectively, by 2030. The capacity additions in the Middle East are from a planned project in Turkey and an announced project in Saudi Arabia. While in Africa, the capacity addition is anticipated to be added solely from an announced project in Egypt.
