A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11920291B2) discloses a method for producing a composite material with corrosion protection and breathability properties. The method involves extruding a corrosion-inhibiting mixture containing an elastomer and a corrosion inhibitor onto a nonwoven surface to form a film layer. This film layer is vapor-permeable, water-impermeable, and provides corrosion protection while allowing breathability to the composite. The elastomer used in the film layer is specified to have a melt flow index ranging from 10 g/10 mins to 300 g/10 mins, with a propylene-ethylene copolymer being a suitable option.

Furthermore, the method includes additional steps such as mixing the elastomer with the corrosion inhibitor, adding a second nonwoven layer to the film layer, and treating the nonwoven surfaces with hydrophilic or hydrophobic coatings. The corrosion inhibitor, morpholine, is present in the mixture in a specific weight percentage range. The resulting composite material exhibits specific characteristics such as a defined moisture vapor transmission rate, hydrostatic head, basis weight, and elongation properties in both machine and cross-machine directions. The method also involves post-extrusion treatments like corona or plasma treatment, as well as incremental stretching of the composite at elevated temperatures to achieve desired performance attributes. Overall, the patented method offers a comprehensive approach to producing composites with enhanced corrosion protection, breathability, and mechanical properties for various applications.
