Sealed Air. has filed a patent for a method to recycle composite materials containing polyolefin and polyvinylidene chloride. The process involves using a polar aprotic solvent to dissolve the polyvinylidene chloride, leaving the undissolved composite material free from the chloride. The precipitated chloride can be collected separately. GlobalData’s report on Sealed Air gives a 360-degree view of the company including its patenting strategy. Buy the report here.

A patent application (Publication Number: US20240018329A1) describes a method for recycling composite materials containing polyolefin and polyvinylidene chloride. The method involves providing the composite material, subjecting it to a polar aprotic solvent to dissolve some of the material, separating the undissolved composite material, which includes dissolved polyvinylidene chloride, and collecting it. The polar aprotic solvent used is primarily N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, dihydrolevoglucosenone, triethyl phosphate, tetrahydrofuran, or blends thereof, with a purity of at least 90 wt %.

Additionally, the method includes mechanically grinding or shredding the composite material before subjecting it to the solvent, and the solvent has a temperature below 160°C. The composite material can be a multilayer barrier film, and the process aims to precipitate polyvinylidene chloride out of the solution with a purity of at least 99.0 wt %. The system for recycling these composite materials includes a shredder or grinder, a solvent bath with a polar aprotic solvent, a filter to separate undissolved material, and a collector for the undissolved composite material, allowing for efficient recycling of polyolefin and polyvinylidene chloride composite materials.
