A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11851819B2) discloses a gas barrier film designed for paper or paperboard-based packaging materials. The film comprises a microfibrillated cellulose layer (MFC layer) with at least one surface grafted with a fatty acid halide, along with a polymer layer on the grafted surface. The MFC layer may contain at least 50% MFC, polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), and a pigment, with a basis weight of less than 55 gsm. The fatty acid halide used can be C16 or C18, such as palmitoyl chloride or stearoyl chloride. The polymer layer includes a thermoplastic polymer and may have a tie resin for better adhesion to the MFC layer.

Moreover, the patent covers a paper or paperboard-based packaging material incorporating this gas barrier film. The material can have the MFC layer directly in contact with the substrate or separated by an adhesive polymer layer. Additionally, protective polymer layers can be added to enhance performance. The packaging material aims for an oxygen transfer rate (OTR) of less than 10 cc/m2/24 h/atm, as per ASTM F-1927 standards. The patent also extends to applications like carton blanks and containers utilizing the gas barrier film. The method for manufacturing the film involves grafting the MFC layer with a fatty acid halide and applying a polymer layer through extrusion coating, ensuring strong adhesion and effective gas barrier properties.
