A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11912448B2) discloses a method and apparatus for forming sealed partially-filled packages filled with a pourable product. The method involves forming a tube from a web of packaging material, filling the product into the tube to create a product column, directing sterile gas into the column to create a gas cushion, and transversally sealing the tube to create packages with a gas space. The pressure of the sterile gas is controlled based on the elevation level of the product column to maintain a constant level and can range between 5 kPa to 40 kPa above ambient pressure.

The packaging apparatus includes a tube forming and sealing device, a filling device, a gas feeding device to create the gas cushion, and a package forming unit for sealing the tube. The apparatus can control the pressure of the sterile gas based on the package size/format and maintain it between 10 kPa to 30 kPa above ambient pressure. Additionally, an auxiliary sterile gas can be used to further pressurize the product column. The apparatus ensures the packages are partially filled with the product and contain a gas space, enhancing product preservation and quality during storage and transportation. The method and apparatus offer a novel approach to packaging pourable products efficiently and effectively.
