Packaging industry M&A deals in Q4 2020 total $2.45bn globally

Total packaging industry M&A deals in Q4 2020 worth $2.45bn were announced globally, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

The value marked a decrease of 56.1% over the previous quarter and a drop of 23% when compared with the last four-quarter average, which stood at $3.18bn.

Comparing deals value in different regions of the globe, North America held the top position, with total announced deals in the period worth $1.45bn. At the country level, the US topped the list in terms of deal value at $1.43bn.

In terms of volumes, North America emerged as the top region for packaging industry M&A deals globally, followed by Europe and then Asia-Pacific.

The top country in terms of M&A deals activity in Q4 2020 was the US with 29 deals, followed by Canada with seven and Italy with seven.

In 2020, as of the end of Q4 2020, packaging M&A deals worth $10.66bn were announced globally, marking a decrease of 35.2% year on year.

The top five packaging industry M&A deals accounted for 91.6% of the overall value during Q4 2020.

The combined value of the top five packaging M&A deals stood at $2.25bn, against the overall value of $2.45bn recorded for the month.

The top five packaging industry deals of Q4 2020 tracked by GlobalData were:

1) Roth CH Acquisition I’s $1.2bn acquisition of PureCycle Technologies

2) The $565.8m acquisition of SIG Combibloc ObeikanLtd by SIG Combibloc Group

3) UFP Industries’ $232m acquisition of PalletOne

4) The $127.26m acquisition of Bangkok Visypak, BG Packaging and Kabinburi Glass Industry by BG Container Glass Public

5) Prairie Industries’ acquisition of Sonoco Poland Packaging Services for $120m.
