The US packaging industry saw a rise of 9.1% in overall deal activity during Q1 2019, when compared with the last four-quarter average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 36 deals worth $4.17bn were announced in Q1 2019, compared to the last four-quarter average of 33 deals.

M&A was the leading category in the quarter with 26 deals which accounted for 72.2% of all deals.

In second place was private equity with six deals, followed by venture financing with four transactions, respectively accounting for 16.7% and 11.1% of overall deal activity in the country’s packaging industry during the quarter.

In terms of value of deals, private equity was the leading deal category in the US packaging industry with total deals worth $4bn, while M&A and venture financing deals totalled $133.47m and $32.5m, respectively.

The US packaging industry deals in Q1 2019: Top deals

The top five packaging deals accounted for 99.6% of the overall value during Q1 2019.

The combined value of the top five packaging industry deals stood at $4.15bn, against the overall value of $4.17bn recorded for the quarter. The top announced US packaging industry deal tracked by GlobalData in Q1 2019 was Platinum Equity’s $2.5bn private equity deal with Multi-Color.

In second place was the $1bn private equity deal with Tank Holdings by Olympus Partners and in third place was One Rock Capital Partners’ $500m private equity deal with Newell Brands.

The $128.27m acquisition of GL&V by Valmet and Arborview Capital, Harbert Growth Partners, Revolution Growth, SJF Ventures and Tao Capital Partners’ venture financing of TemperPack Technologies for $22.5m held fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
