Austrian packaging solutions provider ALPLA and Swiss company FROMM have established a joint venture (JV), PET Recycling Team Wolfen.

The PET Recycling Team Wolfen will recycle PET from the yellow bag, the German bin for household recyclables.

The JV will initially focus on recycling polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles from household recyclables in Germany.

ALPLA signed a PET recycling collaboration agreement with FROMM in July to optimise the recycling rates for PET and reduce CO2 emissions.

Texplast, a subsidiary of Fromm Plastics, will install a third extrusion line at the Wolfen location, which is expected to begin operations in May. This new line will increase the food-grade rPET production capacity by 15,000t.

Both companies are planning to install new sorting and processing systems at the Texplast facility in Wolfen with an investment of €7m.

Alpla also noted that it has received competition approval for a joint venture and is planning to implement the project this year.

“The investment creates the conditions for further developing the recycling process for these items on an industrial scale.”

ALPLA recycling head Georg Lässer said: “We want to process the clear bottles from the yellow bag in such a way that the material can be used in the production of new bottles. We create flakes out of the coloured PET for use in the manufacture of strapping bands.”

The JV will focus on other forms of PET packaging such as trays, thermoforming films, blister packs, fruit trays, packaging for sausage and cheese, and memory cards as it identifies an immense backlog for them.

Texplast spokesperson Matthias Schäfer said: “The investment creates the conditions for further developing the recycling process for these items on an industrial scale in collaboration with the film industry.

“In this way, we also play an important role in achieving legal recycling targets. We also thus ensure that we can continue to produce our PET strapping bands from 100% recycled materials.”
