Scotland-based paper manufacturer Arjowiggins has announced the launch of a new sustainable packaging product to replace single-used plastics and help reduce environmental impact.

Named as Sylvicta, the translucent barrier paper has been designed to maintain food and cosmetics’ quality like conventional plastics.

Developed using renewable raw materials, the paper is fully recyclable, compostable and marine degradable, according to the company.

The company’s research and development teams developed the paper leveraging precision fibre refining. No harmful chemicals were used in the production.

Arjowiggins Translucent Papers division managing director Christophe Jordan said: “Despite the ongoing movement towards more sustainable packaging, plastics still remain a popular choice, largely for practical reasons.

“Until now, most of the existing offer, mainly in single-use packaging, use unrecyclable, multi-layered laminates incorporating plastics or aluminium foil.

“With Sylvicta, such solutions can be turned into fully recyclable, compostable and biodegradable paper packaging. The product is simply revolutionary.”

Sylvicta offers high barrier to oxygen, thereby reducing food waste by extending shelf life during transportation to retail and consumer.

Additionally, the paper blocks aroma, mineral oils and fatty foodstuffs from leaking.

Sylvicta can be foil-stamped, glued, embossed, printed in offset, gravure, and flexography, metallised, or coated with heat or cold-sealable materials.

Arjowiggins’ Sylvicta can be implemented from pouches for dry fruits, bags for salads, sachets for solid soap, as well as pet food and flow-packs.

The company noted that the FSC and PEFC-certified paper is manufactured at a facility that is compliant to ISO 14001 and carbon-offset through the World Land Trust’s Carbon Balanced programme.
