US-based packaging material provider Avery Dennison has launched its new temperature data logger technology, TT Sensor Plus, across Europe.

Similar to the size of a credit card, the newly launched label can be inserted in or attached to packages.

TT Sensor Plus stores data in a built-in near field communication (NFC) chip, powered by a flexible battery.

Suitable for use in pharmaceutical products, the new label can be read and programmed by any NFC-enabled smartphone or other smart device.

Avery Dennison new technology and business development director Mary Greenwood said: “TT Sensor Plus uses the latest temperature data logging technology to provide brand owners the ability to collect data regarding the temperature ranges their goods are subjected to during shipping.

“The resulting analytics allow them to make informed decisions about whether a product’s quality has been preserved or compromised en route.”

Launched in the US in September, TT Sensor Plus has already been used to monitor the performance of small-scale, climate-controlled food and beverage shipments.

A test was carried out on shipments to customers in four US states, during which two labels were used on each of the shipments to monitor the temperature outside and inside the packages.

In October, Avery Dennison’s Printer and Fastener Solution (PFS) division unveiled a new automated food labelling printing system, Monarch Freshmarx 9417+.
