Constantia Flexibles has unveiled a recycle-ready innovation for coffee packaging in collaboration with Delica, part of Migros Industrie.

The flexible packaging manufacturer implemented its EcoVerHighPlus mono polypropylene (PP) laminate into a soft bag.

The EcoVerHighPlus laminate is designed to meet the demands of coffee packaging, with better barrier properties that lock in aroma and freshness for both ground coffee and coffee beans.

Its advanced material structure intends to deliver a recyclable packaging option without compromising quality or functionality, Constantia Flexibles said.

Specifically, the mono PP valve is said to improve product freshness by keeping external gases out and allowing volatile gases to escape.

Constantia Flexibles market product manager for beverages Tobias Acker said: “This project highlights the positive impact of close collaboration. Thanks to our partnership with Delica AG we have successfully launched one of the first recyclable-ready mono PP laminates for coffee soft bags on the market. This represents a meaningful step forward for both the industry and the environment.”

EcoVerHighPlus for Technical Films has been tested at Cyclos for recyclability, with results demonstrating a 95% recyclability rating for the unprinted version.

Trials with the EcoVerHighPlus laminate were launched in early 2023, with promising initial results. Migros carried out shelf-life tests and coffee tastings to assess performance.

Constantia Flexibles optimised the packaging’s structure based on this feedback to improve recyclability while maintaining the necessary protective properties.

By October 2023, Constania ran the first fully printed EcoVerHighPlus laminate and a long-run production test in January 2024 confirmed that the material performed well on Migros’ packaging line.
