European Bioplastics (EUBP), an association representing the bioplastics industry in Europe, has welcomed the members of the European Parliament’s (MEPs) proposal to modify the European Union’s (EU) packaging and packaging waste directive.

According to EUBP, the MEPs plenary vote to amend the directive will enable the EU member states to support the use of bio-based materials in the production of various packaging solutions.

Paving the way for a circular economy in the EU, it will also improve market conditions for bio-based materials and products.

European Bioplastics chairman François de Bie said: “This vote is an important milestone in strengthening the link between the circular economy and the bioeconomy in Europe.

"Bio-based and recycled materials are starting to be equally recognised as a viable solution to make packaging more sustainable and reduce our dependency on finite fossil resources."

EUBP also noted that the latest vote to revise the packaging and packaging waste directive would support the alternate use of fossil resources and drive the transition to a low-carbon, bio-based economy.
