German-based Fraport has introduced bamboo coffee mugs with an airport-themed design at Frankfurt Airport (FRA).

All restaurants located in the two terminals of the airport are currently offering these new environmentally friendly cups to the passengers, in addition to other disposable options.

The new bamboo cup will be used to serve tea or coffee to these passengers, reducing the usage of the disposable cups.

Created by Berlin designer Julia Schonlau, FRA’s new bamboo cup is made from a material as light as bamboo to ensure maximum convenience to passengers.

The design of the cup exhibits everyday scenes at the airport.

“FRA’s new bamboo cup is made from a material as light as bamboo to ensure maximum convenience to passengers.”

Being one of the important international aviation hubs in the country, FRA serves a large number of transfer passengers who order tea or coffee to go.

Approximately 25,000 hot beverages are ordered daily at the airport’s restaurants and cafés.

All the restaurants and cafés within the airport also agreed to offer a discount to the passengers who return the reusable cups or mugs made of other materials.

Subsequently, the airport encourages the passengers, guests and airport staff to donate the discounted amount to an environmental services group.

The FRA initiative has also been welcomed by the Hessian Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.

Last year, the ministry launched the ‘BonusBecher’ (bonus cup) initiative, which aims to reduce the usage of disposable cups. More than 2.8 million cups end up in landfills in Germany every year.

Around 3,600 businesses have become associated with this initiative that offers a discount for using reusable cups.
